Sports Education classes

About

The School system in Cambodia offers free Primary School education to all children living in the villages. However, there are no Sports Classes offered as part of the national schooling curriculum. Sports education is offered mostly in town for a fee, which village children can’t often afford.

The SHCC currently provides sports classes in soccer, volleyball and general fitness for over 1400 students within the Kro Bei Riel community. The SHCC’s hope is for the continuation & growth of these classes for which funding is vital. Recruitment of staff, resources & sports equipment are required to progress this initiative. Currently we rely solely on donations and sponsorship by organizations and individuals abroad to fund our program.

SHCC currently offers soccer, volleyball and general fitness to the children. As new volunteers come to assist, they sometimes bring knowledge, skills and equipment. This provides our children opportunities to learn new sports and activities.

  • All classes are taught by Khmer teachers and Khmer trainee teachers, with at times, assistance from international volunteers.

  • Class sizes vary between 10 – 30 students

  • Each class runs daily for one hour

  • Students range in age from 5 – 20 years

Last year SHCC entered two teams in the provincial NGO football league for the first time. Both teams had great success, our under 12’s team won their competition and under 15’s came runner up in their grade.

The benefits of the children participating in these tournaments were immense. The enjoyment factor, experience of competition as well as the opportunity to socialize with children outside of their commune from other areas within the province was fantastic. This opportunity engendered pride within our community.

SHCC's goal is to build a sporting complex including a soccer pitch, volleyball courts, tennis and basketball court and toilet facilities. The objectives of the project are as follows;

  • Provide free, quality sports education to the children and young adults in the Kro Bei Riel Community

  • Provide a stimulating, positive and safe environment for the students to learn

  • Encourage positive social interaction between students from different villages and throughout the province

  • Provide fun and safe alternative activities and interests for the Kro Bei Riel community

  • Teach the children the importance of being physically active

  • Improve the students self esteem
