Founder and Director – Choan Sambath

Hello my name is Mr. Sambath and I am the Director and founder of the SHCC. I live in Totea Village Kro Bei Riel Community where SHCC is based. I was born and raised in the countryside and none of my family members were able to get an education because we were very poor and could not afford transport or school materials. My parents were farmers and needed to support six children which was a struggle, therefore I needed to earn my own money to support myself through Primary and Secondary School. Throughout the first years of my employment after completing my study I had many different jobs around Siem Reap to earn money to survive. During the time when work was rare I spent some time in a Pagoda as a temple boy cooking and collecting firewood for the Monks. Later, I found some work in a Hotel and worked hard to save money. I knew that the children back in my Village were struggling and I decided that when I had enough money, I would open a school and Community Centre to help bring about change and provide opportunities for the children of my Community. In 2007, I started the SHCC and I am very lucky that we have received so much community and international support to keep our school moving forward into a successful future.

Social Community Development Manager – Yean Phanith

Hello, my name is Phanith, I am the Social and Community development manager at SHCC. I live in Popis village, Kro Bei Riel community, Siem Reap province. I have been working at SHCC for nearly one year and in that time my goal has been to develop cooperation within the community, working alongside team management. I love this job because I get valuable work experience and knowledge. But I especially enjoy it because I get to help the young adults and children in my community. SHCC is a very important school as it allows the younger generation to work together and I am very excited to be a leader at SHCC.

I have 3 main goals for the Social Work project at SHCC;

  • Education for the children (encourage the students to study Khmer and English to a high standard)

  • Create a clean, hygienic and healthy environment for the children

  • Teach the children about budgeting

My goal for the Sports Education project is teach the children about different types of sports and to show them that being physically active is a very important aspect of life. It is my hope that this will keep them from using drugs and committing crimes in the community.

As the Social and Community development manager my wish is that these two projects will offer a community model which can be extended out to the other communities within the Kingdom of Cambodia.
